CALL TO ACTION: MANDATORY PAID SICK DAYS BILL

 S. 1073 would guarantee employees in Massachusetts up to seven paid sick days (pro-rated for part-timers) to care for themselves, their child, spouse, parent, or the parent of a spouse. The legislation received a favorable recommendation from the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development in spite of opposition from major employer groups who argued that it places a costly mandate on the employer community and threatens their ability to negotiate the benefits that best fit the needs of their employees and their business. Small retailers and restaurants employ predominantly part-time workers. These workers have chosen not to take benefits like paid sick days so they can enjoy flexible hours. If these employees unexpectedly call in sick the employer often times is required to pay another employee or temp to fill in for the missing worker. The cost to employers during this time of economic uncertainty jeopardizes the back bone of our economy. Though the bill intends to help workers it could end up hurting them by forcing employers to limit the amount of part-time employees they hire. The bill, sponsored by Sens. Patricia Jehlen (D-Somerville) and Steven Tolman (D-Brighton) now goes before the full Senate for vote. Contact your Senator here .
